Known
to promote calmness, spiritual awareness, balance, inner peace,
mind quieting and good judgment, this stone is often used
in mediation. Also
thought to encourage celibacy and piety, it was an important
ornament of many churches during the middle ages.
The
color purple is traditionally associated with royalty and
has been used to adorn monarchs and rulers, including the
British Crown Jewel collection.
Did
you know that Amethyst is also considered a symbol of sobriety?
According to legend, Amethyst originated when Dionysus, the
God of Intoxication, was angered by an insult from a mortal.
He swore revenge against the next mortal he crossed by creating
tigers. Amethyst, a beautiful young maiden was on her way
to pay tribute to the goddess Diana. Diana, aware of Dionysus'
tigers, turned Amethyst into a statue of quartz to protect
her. It is said that Dionysus wept tears of wine upon witnessing
the beauty of the statue, staining the quartz purple, thereby
creating the gem Amethyst. This is why amethyst has been considered
to be a strong anecdote against drunkenness since ancient
times.
